Description
2 Euro Commemorative Coin Malta 2024 Maltese Walled Cities Ċittadella, Gozo – 2024. This €2 commemorative coin begins a series devoted to Malta’s fortified cities and celebrates the Ċittadella on Gozo. The stronghold stands on elevated ground at the island’s centre and forms part of Victoria, whose urban area includes Rabat and the Ċittadella. Settlement at the site reaches back at least to the Bronze Age. Around 1600, the Order of St John had the fortifications redesigned and strengthened under the direction of Italian military engineer Giovanni Rinaldini. Although the complex lost military importance from the 1760s, it remained Gozo’s administrative centre. The coin depicts the Ċittadella, with the national side designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason.
