2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2024 530th Anniversary of the death of Ghirlandaio San Marino’s 2024 commemorative issue honours the 530th anniversary of Domenico Ghirlandaio’s death. Born in Florence in 1449, the important painter of the Florentine Early Renaissance died in the same city on 11 January 1494. The coin therefore links a major figure in Renaissance art with the precise historical interval separating his death from the year of issue. The central image presents the praying Virgin, taken from Ghirlandaio’s painting “Adoration of the Shepherds”. The work is housed in the Sassetti Chapel of Santa Trinita in Florence, tying the design to the artistic heritage of the painter’s native city. The composition also identifies the subject with the inscription “GHIRLANDAIO” and includes the identifying initials of the artist Valerio de Seta.
