Following the dissolution and fire-damage of the Jesuit College, Empress Maria Theresa ordered 637 surviving books to be placed at public disposal, a moment recognised as the foundation date of today’s National and University Library. Over the centuries, the library changed names and expanded its responsibilities, becoming both Slovenia’s national guardian of written heritage and the University of Ljubljana’s central library. Since 1945, it has operated in Jože Plečnik’s celebrated library palace, recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2021. The anniversary therefore celebrates enduring access to knowledge and national cultural memory.
