2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2025 100th Anniversary of the birth of Mikis Theodorakis Greece’s 2-euro commemorative coin of 2025 marks the centenary of Mikis Theodorakis’s birth. Theodorakis (1925–2021) was one of Greece’s most influential composers and public intellectuals of the twentieth century. Born on the island of Chios, he fused Byzantine and folk traditions with concert music and modern poetry. He joined the resistance during the Nazi occupation and later suffered persecution and exile during the Greek Civil War. After studying in Athens and Paris, he produced symphonies, operas, songs, and major film scores, including the internationally famous music for Zorba the Greek. Following the military coup of 1967, his music was banned and he was imprisoned and exiled. After democracy was restored in 1974, he remained a composer, parliamentarian, and enduring symbol of freedom.
