2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican City 2004 75th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Vatican City State 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican 2004 – 75th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Vatican City State 1929–2004 commemorates the creation of Vatican statehood in the twentieth century. Its legal basis was the Lateran Treaty, concluded by the Holy See and Italy on 11 February 1929. Following ratification on 7 June, the agreement established the Vatican City State as a sovereign entity recognized under international law. The 2004 issue therefore recalls a decisive moment in the modern political history of the papacy and Rome. Its central design presents a stylized outline of the city-state’s surrounding walls, with St Peter’s Basilica prominently placed in front. The dates 1929–2004 and the Italian anniversary wording identify both the historical event and its seventy-five-year perspective.
