2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2026 800th Anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi Italy’s 2026 €2 commemorative coin marks the 800th anniversary of the death of Francis of Assisi, who died on 3 October 1226. Born into a merchant family in Assisi, Francis turned in the early thirteenth century toward a demanding life of poverty, prayer, and practical compassion. His religious movement developed into the Franciscan Order, while his call for spiritual renewal left a lasting mark on medieval Christianity and Italian cultural memory. Pope Gregory IX canonized him in 1228, only two years after his death. The coin’s central portrait follows a fourteenth-century fresco by Simone Martini in the Basilica of Saint Francis at Assisi. The surrounding inscription gives Francis’s name and the dates 1226–2026; the mint mark, Italian Republic monogram, and artist’s initials identify the issue. Twelve stars symbolize the European Union.
