Description
2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2026 Bicentenary of the Exodus from Missolonghi This Greek 2-euro commemorative coin marks the 200th anniversary of the Exodus from Missolonghi. During the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, the city in western Greece was besieged for a prolonged period and cut off from supplies. As the situation for those trapped inside grew increasingly dire in the spring of 1826, the residents and defenders decided to attempt a joint breakout. On the night of April 10–11, 1826, they left the besieged city; a large number of them lost their lives in the process. The events at Missolonghi attracted significant attention beyond Greece and bolstered European support for the Greek independence movement. The coin’s design captures the dramatic breakout in a dynamic depiction. The upper section features the Greek inscription commemorating the 200th anniversary, accompanied by the year of issue, 2026.
