Description
2 Euro Commemorative Coin Belgium 2026 50 years National Geographic Institute & 200 years Royal Observatory of Belgium Belgium’s 2026 commemorative 2-euro coin marks the anniversaries of two of the country’s scientific institutions: the Royal Observatory of Belgium, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary, and the National Geographic Institute, which is marking 50 years of existence. Founded in 1826, the Observatory has evolved into a major Belgian research center for astronomy and Earth observation. The National Geographic Institute has existed in its current form since 1976 and is responsible for tasks such as geographic reference data and the cartographic mapping of Belgium. The coin’s design combines both fields of activity in a single image. At the center is a child standing on a stylized map, reaching an arm toward the sky. The map alludes to the surveying and geographic documentation of the country, while the starry sky depicted above symbolizes astronomical research. At the same time, the young figure represents future generations and ongoing scientific progress. The names of the two institutions encircle the central motif. The lower section features the country code "BE," the year of issue (2026), and the mint marks of the Belgian Mint Master and the Dutch mint. The coin was issued on September 25, 2026, and is available exclusively in collector editions.
