2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro The Finnish 2 euro commemorative coin marks the tenth anniversary of the third stage of the Economic and Monetary Union, which began on 01.01.1999 with the irrevocable fixing of exchange rates and the introduction of the euro. Finland was one of eleven countries admitted to that stage from 1999. The central motif links a stylised human figure with the euro sign, portraying the euro as a further step in Europe’s trade and economic integration. The design by George (Georgios) Stamatopoulos from the mint of the Bank of Greece was chosen in an EU‑wide public vote from five. The coin bears the inscriptions SUOMI FINLAND, EMU 1999–2009 and issue year 2009; the outer ring shows the twelve EU stars. Finland’s release date is given as 15.01.2009; another listing records only January 2009.
