2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro The Greek €2 commemorative coin issued in 2009 marks the tenth anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union and the birth of the euro. Its design presents a stylised human figure whose left arm extends into the euro sign, symbolising the relationship between European citizens and the shared currency. The dates 1999–2009 point to the beginning of EMU’s third stage: on 1 January 1999, the exchange rates of the initially participating eleven countries were fixed irrevocably, while responsibility for a single monetary policy passed to the European Central Bank. Euro coins and banknotes entered circulation in 2002. Greece joined the euro area in 2001.
