2 Euro Commemorative Coin Ireland 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro The 2009 joint issue commemorates ten years of Economic and Monetary Union since the euro was introduced as a book currency on 1 January 1999. Georgios Stamatopoulos placed people at the centre of the design: a stylised human figure flows into the euro symbol, linking currency, everyday life and economic cooperation. The composition also suggests the long development of commerce, from early exchange to a shared currency. Ireland’s version bears “ÉIRE” and “AEA 1999–2009”; AEA is the Irish-language abbreviation for Economic and Monetary Union. The designer’s initials, ΓΣ, are incorporated into the motif.
