2 Euro Commemorative Coin Italy 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro Italy’s 2009 €2 commemorative coin marks the tenth anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), whose third stage began on 1 January 1999. At that point, the exchange rates of the eleven participating EU countries were irrevocably fixed, the euro was introduced as a common currency, and a single monetary policy came under the responsibility of the European Central Bank. Italy was among the founding participants. The coin’s central design presents European monetary integration as part of a much longer history of exchange. Its deliberately primitive-looking image evokes prehistoric barter and symbolically leads toward economic and monetary union as a later stage in the development of trade. Designed by Georgios Stamatopoulos, the piece carries twelve EU stars around its edge, while “UEM 1999–2009” identifies the anniversary.
