2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union It marks the tenth anniversary of EMU’s third stage, launched on 1 January 1999 when the euro existed only for accounting and electronic payments; banknotes and coins followed on 1 January 2002 in twelve EU states. Luxembourg released its coin on 15 January 2009. In 2009 all euro-area countries issued a common commemorative coin; its design was chosen by EU citizens in an online vote. The motif shows a stylised human figure merging into the euro sign, symbolising the euro as the latest step in a long evolution of trade and economic integration that begins with symbolised prehistoric barter. Luxembourg’s version adds a hologram portrait of Grand Duke Henri, inscriptions “LËTZEBUERG” and “UEM 1999–2009,” twelve outer‑ring stars, and the initials “ΓΣ” of designer Georgios Stamatopoulos.
