Chosen in an EU-wide competition, its design traces a route from early barter to a shared currency. In this way, the Dutch national inscription is paired with a visual history of Europe’s growing economic interdependence. The dates 1999–2009 refer to the first decade of EMU after the euro was introduced as book money.
