2 Euro Commemorative Coin Portugal 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro Portugal's 2009 €2 coin commemorates the tenth anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union, whose third stage began with the euro as book money on 1 January 1999. Issued on 5 January 2009, the design was chosen in a 2008 EU‑wide online vote of five proposals (about 140,000 participants; winner 41%). It shows a stylised human figure whose arm becomes the euro symbol, representing the euro as the newest phase in the long history of trade. Inscriptions read PORTUGAL and UEM 1999–2009; the INCM mint mark and twelve outer stars appear. Designer: Georgios Stamatopoulos (ΓΣ).
