2 Euro Commemorative Coin Slovakia 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro The third stage of Economic and Monetary Union began on 1 January 1999, when exchange rates were irrevocably fixed and a single monetary policy was established. Slovakia joined the euro area as its sixteenth member on 1 January 2009, the very year this common issue marked the tenth anniversary. The shared design transforms a human figure into the euro symbol, linking the currency to Europe’s wider process of economic integration.
