2 Euro Commemorative Coin Slovenia 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro Slovenian €2 Commemorative Coin 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union This commemorative issue marks the start of EMU’s third stage on 1 January 1999, when eleven EU countries adopted the euro as a common currency, initially for accounting purposes; euro banknotes and coins entered circulation in 2002. The Maastricht Treaty had established the transition as a three-stage process, linking monetary integration with closer economic coordination. Slovenia became the euro area’s thirteenth member on 1 January 2007, so it joined the collective euro-area issue six years later. Its Europe-wide chosen design presents the euro as the culmination of centuries of trade and economic integration, while also symbolising the shared monetary framework administered through the Eurosystem.
