2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2009 10th Anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union, the birth of the euro Spain issued a 2‑euro commemorative coin in the first half of 2009 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union. The euro was introduced in 1999, when eleven countries irrevocably fixed their bilateral exchange rates and adopted a common monetary and exchange‑rate policy; the European Central Bank had been established six months earlier. Banknotes and coins followed in 2002. The shared design shows a stylised human figure flowing into the euro symbol, representing the single currency and the EMU as the most recent stage in Europe’s long history of trade and economic integration. Greek central bank sculptor George Stamatopoulos created the winning design in an EU‑wide online vote from five shortlisted proposals. The outer ring bears the twelve stars and the Spanish issue names the country and “UEM 1999-2009.”
