2 Euro Commemorative Coin Spain 2010 Historic centre of Cordoba - UNESCO World Heritage Sites The Spanish 2-euro commemorative series launched in 2010 pays tribute to Spain’s UNESCO World Heritage sites; its inaugural issue focuses on the historic centre of Córdoba and, in particular, the Mosque-Cathedral. Córdoba holds the distinction of being the first Spanish entry on the UNESCO list in 1984. The coin’s reverse captures the so-called “forest of columns” inside the Great Mosque, celebrated as one of the most significant and oldest testimonies of Islamic art in Europe. Erected between the 8th and 10th centuries and later consecrated as a Christian cathedral, the complex underwent successive alterations that the design subtly evokes. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union, and the mint notes a numbered proof issue.
