2 Euro Commemorative Coin Slovenia 2010 200th Anniversary of the Botanical Garden of Ljubljana 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Slovenia 2010 200th Anniversary of the Ljubljana Botanical Garden This coin marks the bicentenary of the Ljubljana Botanical Garden, whose origins reach back to 1810, when it opened as a garden of native flora at the École Centrale. Its foundation and early direction were closely associated with Franc Hladnik (1773–1844), the garden’s designer and first director. The anniversary therefore celebrates more than a historic site: it highlights two centuries of continuous scientific, educational and cultural work. In 1920 the garden became linked to the University of Ljubljana and is now part of its Biotechnical Faculty. As the oldest botanical garden in south-eastern Europe, it contributes to biodiversity research, plant conservation and public learning.
