2 Euro Commemorative Coin Finland 2010 Currency Decree of 1860 granting Finland the right to issue banknotes and coins This issue commemorates the 1860 decision that granted Finland the right to issue its own currency, laying the groundwork for the Finnish markka. That development is set against the backdrop of Finland’s status at the time as an autonomous Grand Duchy under Russian rule; the Bank of Finland places the origin of a distinct Finnish currency within that historical trajectory, while the European Central Bank highlights the 1860 decision as the starting point for Finland’s own currency. The coin’s design links national identity with monetary themes: a stylized Finnish lion appears at left alongside an inscribed year, at right the mintmark and a numeric sequence evoking various denominations; FI appears at the base and the outer ring bears the twelve EU stars.
