2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2010 2.500th Anniversary of the Battle of Marathon Issued in 2010, Greece’s €2 commemorative coin marks the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon. In September 490 BCE, on the plain in northeastern Attica, an improvised Athenian army, supported by troops from Plataea, confronted Persian forces during the first Persian invasion of Greece. Led by the strategist Miltiades, the numerically inferior Greeks achieved a decisive victory and checked the immediate advance toward Athens. In later memory, Marathon became a powerful symbol of liberty and civic self-determination. The coin’s central design fuses a shield with a running warrior, while the bird on the shield symbolically evokes the emergence of Western civilization.
