2 Euro Commemorative Coin Germany 2011 Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Cologne Cathedral (Bundesländer I) Issued in 2011, this 2-euro commemorative coin celebrates North Rhine-Westphalia through one of its most recognizable landmarks, Cologne Cathedral. Construction of the Gothic cathedral began in 1248, then continued after an interruption lasting more than three centuries before the building was completed in 1880. At the time of completion, it was considered the tallest building in the world. The coin depicts the cathedral’s distinctive western façade and its twin towers. The inscription “NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN” explicitly links the monument to the federal state, while the surrounding stars, year and national designation complete the design.
