2 Euro Commemorative Coin Luxembourg 2011 50th Anniversary of the appointment by the Grand-Duchess Charlotte of her son Jean as lieutenant-representant This issue marks the 50th anniversary of Hereditary Grand Duke Jean’s appointment by his mother, Grand Duchess Charlotte, as her Lieutenant-Représentant. A grand-ducal decree of 28 April 1961 initiated his involvement in exercising the monarch’s prerogatives, while the Grand Ducal Court dates the appointment itself to 4 May 1961. After Charlotte’s abdication, Jean acceded in 1964 and reigned until 2000. The design places the portraits on the right in a vertical stack: at the front Grand Duke Henri in left-facing profile, with Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Charlotte set below or behind. Above the three portraits appear “LËTZEBUERG” and the year “2011”; the names are placed beneath each likeness. The outer ring bears the twelve EU stars. EUROCOLLEZIONE credits a team of the Banque centrale du Luxembourg; the ECB gives no individual designer.
