Its historical reference point is 1861, when the Kingdom of Italy emerged from the Risorgimento; on 17 March 2011, Italy observed the anniversary as a national day of commemoration. The year-long programme combined educational initiatives, restoration work at monuments, memorials and museums, and a broad range of cultural events. The coin’s central design reproduces the official anniversary emblem: three Italian tricolour flags shown in motion stand for the unity anniversaries celebrated in 1911, 1961 and 2011.
