2 Euro Commemorative Coin Greece 2011 XIII Special Olympics World Summer Games - Athens 2011 The Greek €2 commemorative coin issued in 2011 honors the XIII Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Athens. From 25 June to 4 July 2011, Greece hosted an international sporting event for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Opening the competition in the historic Panathenaic Stadium deliberately linked the ancient Olympic heritage of Athens with the modern ideal of inclusive sport. Participants from many countries competed across a range of Olympic-type disciplines. The coin’s design combines elements of the Special Olympics symbol with the Games’ emblem, commemorating not only athletic achievement but also participation, dignity, and the movement’s international commitment to recognizing people with intellectual disabilities as equal members of society.
