2 Euro Commemorative Coin San Marino 2011 500th Anniversary of the birth of Giorgio Vasari San Marino’s 2011 commemorative issue marks five centuries since the birth of Giorgio Vasari in Arezzo. Born in 1511 and deceased in Florence in 1574, Vasari combined careers as a painter, architect, and writer. His lasting importance to cultural history rests especially on the “Vite,” his influential collection of biographies of Italian artists. First published in 1550 and expanded in 1568, the work became a foundational contribution to the study and writing of art history. The coin presents a detail from Vasari’s painting “Giuditta decapitates Oloferne.” The inscriptions “G. VASARI” and “SAN MARINO,” together with the dates “1511–2011,” identify the artist and define the commemorative occasion.
